Thunder is the sound of lightning, so if you can hear thunder, lightning is close enough to be dangerous. Lightning can strike many kilometers away from the storm, even when the sky overhead looks blue. That is why the rule is: when thunder roars, go indoors.
You Hear Thunder
Step one: you hear thunder. Thunder is made when lightning heats the air so fast that the air booms. If you can hear it, you are within striking distance.
Go Into a Building
Step two: go into a building. A house, school, or store is a safe place. Open fields, hills, trees, and water are dangerous places. Stay away from windows and plumbing too.
Wait 30 Minutes
Step three: wait it out. Stay inside until 30 minutes have passed since the last thunder you heard. Lightning can still strike after the rain stops.

Let's take a closer look at safe places! A building with walls and a roof is the best place. A hard-top car with the windows closed is the next best place. And open sky, trees, and the water are never safe during thunder.
