Intro

Hey, sky explorers! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do blizzards make it hard to see?

The Big Idea

A blizzard is a snowstorm with strong winds and very low visibility. The wind blows snow around so much that the sky and the ground blend together into one white blur. That is called a whiteout, and it can make the world seem to disappear.

Snow Blows Around

Step one: snow blows around. Strong winds lift snow from the ground and mix it with the snow that is falling. Now the air itself is full of snow.

Contrast Disappears

Step two: contrast disappears. We see things because they look different from what is behind them. In a blizzard, everything looks white and gray. Shadows and edges disappear.

Depth Cues Fade

Step three: depth cues fade. Your brain judges distance using edges, shadows, and details. With those gone, you cannot tell how far away things are. It is easy to get lost, even close to home.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a whiteout! The blowing snow fills the air. The sky and the ground look the same color. And your eyes lose their clues, so it is hard to know where you are.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! If officials say not to travel, stay home. Blizzards can last for hours. Driving in low visibility is risky, so grown-ups avoid it. If a grown-up must go out, they dress in warm layers, with a hat and mittens. Families can keep blankets, warm clothes, and flashlights ready at home.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, check the weather alerts when snow is expected. Practice dressing in warm layers. Plan a cozy stay-home day with games and hot chocolate. Then ask: why does a whiteout make it so hard to see?

Outro

Blizzards hide the world, so staying home is the smart choice. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
