Intro

Hello, brave brains! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is shelter in a basement safer in a tornado?

The Big Idea

In a tornado, the biggest danger is flying debris, like broken glass, boards, and branches. A basement or a low interior room puts more walls and floors between you and that debris. More walls means more protection.

Wind Throws Debris

Step one: the wind throws debris. A tornado's winds can pick up sticks, boards, and broken glass and send them flying. Windows are weak spots that can break.

Go Low and Inside

Step two: go low and inside. A basement is underground, so the wind passes above you. If there is no basement, go to the lowest floor. Pick a small interior room without windows, like a bathroom or closet.

Add More Cover

Step three: add cover. More walls between you and the outside make it safer. A grown-up can help you cover your head and neck with your arms or a helmet. Stay there until officials say the danger has passed.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a safe place! The basement is the lowest and best place to shelter. The interior room has walls all around and no windows. And the windows are the places to stay away from.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Interior rooms put more walls between you and the outdoors. A mobile home is not safe in a tornado, so grown-ups plan to go to a sturdy building ahead of time. Covering your head and neck protects the most important parts of you. Always follow your grown-ups and the official alerts.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, tour your home and find your safest room today. Look for a low spot with no windows. Keep a flashlight and a pair of sturdy shoes nearby. Ask yourself: why do more walls give more protection?
