Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is a tornado watch different from a warning?

The Big Idea

A tornado watch and a tornado warning sound alike, but they mean very different things. A watch means a tornado could happen, so be ready. A warning means one is happening or about to, so take action now.

A Watch: Be Ready

Step one: a watch means be ready. Forecasters see weather conditions that could make tornadoes in your area. Nothing has been spotted yet, so use the time to plan and stay alert.

A Warning: Go Now

Step two: a warning means go now. A warning means a tornado has been seen, or radar shows one forming. You need to move to your safe place right away, without waiting.

Know Your Safe Place

Step three: know your safe place. The safest spot is the lowest floor of a sturdy building, in a room without windows, like a basement or interior bathroom. Cover your head, and stay there until the warning ends.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the alerts! A watch means conditions could produce tornadoes, so be ready. A warning means one is happening or about to hit, so act now. And your safe place is the lowest, windowless room.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Watch means get ready. Warning means go now. A weather radio or phone alerts can wake you up, even at night. Cars and mobile homes are not safe places during a tornado warning. Ask a grown-up where your safest room is, and practice going there.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Ask a grown-up where your safest room is. Walk there together and look for any windows. Pack a small kit with a flashlight and shoes. Then practice going there when you hear a warning.

Outro

Watch means get ready, and warning means go now. Knowing the difference keeps you safe. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
