Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is a car usually safer in a storm (but not always)?
The Big Idea
A hard-topped car with its windows up can protect you from lightning, but only sometimes. If lightning strikes it, the metal shell helps carry the electricity around the outside. That keeps most of the current away from the people inside.
Lightning Hits the Car
Step one: lightning hits the car. If lightning strikes a hard-topped car, the electricity touches the metal body first. The current prefers to flow through that metal rather than through the air inside.
Current Goes Around
Step two: the current goes around. It travels over the outer shell and then jumps to the ground, often through the tires or air. This is called a Faraday cage effect, and it can keep the people inside protected.
When It Isn't Safe
Step three: when a car is not safe. Convertibles, cars with soft tops, and cars with open windows do not give the same shield. Also, touching metal parts inside, like door handles, is not safe, so keep your hands in your lap.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at safe shelters! The metal shell guides the current around the car. Closed windows keep the shield complete. And a sturdy building is still the best shelter of all.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! A car is a good second choice if you cannot reach a building. Rubber tires do not protect you. It is the metal shell that does the job. If you are in a car in a storm, pull over, stay inside, and keep the windows closed. Cars help sometimes. Buildings help best.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Review your family's storm meeting spots. Pick the safest room in your home. Plan where to go if you are out in a car. Then practice with a grown-up.
Outro
A car can be a shield sometimes, but a sturdy building is better. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
