Intro
Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does lightning zigzag?
The Big Idea
Lightning never travels in a straight line. It zigzags and branches across the sky. That is because air is not the same everywhere, so electricity finds its way in short steps. Zigzags are physics, not anger.
A Path Feels Its Way Down
Step one: a path feels its way down. A faint, invisible channel of electricity starts from the cloud, moving in short jumps of about 50 meters. It stops, then jumps again, each time in a slightly new direction.
The Air Is Uneven
Step two: the air is uneven. Moisture, dust, and electric charge are spread unevenly through the air. The path turns toward the spots that are easiest for electricity to pass through.
Branches Spread Out
Step three: the branches spread out. The channel splits wherever there is more than one good route, like a river with many streams. When the path reaches the ground, one big current surges back up, and we see the bright flash.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at a lightning bolt! The cloud is where the lightning begins. The zigzag path follows the easiest route. And the branches are the extra paths that split off.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! The actual flash we see happens in a split second, but the path is built in steps first. Some lightning stays in the clouds and never reaches the ground. The branching look is a bit like the cracks in a dried-up lakebed or the roots of a tree. If you hear thunder, go indoors right away with a grown-up.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Later, look at lightning photos with a grown-up. Pick one bolt and count the branches. Draw its zigzag path on paper. Never go outside to watch real lightning.
Outro
Lightning zigzags because the sky is not the same everywhere. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
