Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do thunderstorms build so fast?

The Big Idea

On a hot, humid afternoon, a calm blue sky can turn into a thunderstorm in less than an hour. Hot, moist air rockets upward, and it cools as it rises. Scientists call that unstable air, and it is a storm factory.

Hot Moist Air Rises

Step one: hot, moist air rises. The Sun heats the ground, and the air near it gets very warm and full of water vapor. Warm air is lighter, so it starts to rocket upward.

The Cloud Towers Up

Step two: the cloud towers up. As the air rises it cools, and the vapor condenses into a cloud and releases heat, which makes the air rise even more. That cycle pushes the cloud higher, up to about 10 kilometers or more.

A Storm Is Born

Step three: the storm is born. Inside the tall cloud, ice and water drops bump into each other and build up electric charge. That leads to rain, thunder, and lightning, sometimes in less than an hour from clear sky.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a growing storm! The updraft is the strong wind that carries air upward. The tower cloud is the tall storm cloud that grows. And lightning is the spark that can come from the cloud.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Thunderstorms are vertical weather engines. The tops of big thunderclouds can be over 10 kilometers high, higher than airplanes usually fly. They often form on hot summer afternoons. If the sky darkens fast, head indoors with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! On a hot summer day, watch the sky from a safe spot with a grown-up. See if fluffy clouds start to grow tall. If the sky darkens fast, head indoors right away. Remember, do storm watching only from inside.

Outro

A storm can grow fast, so always respect the sky. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
