Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why can you see your breath on a cold day?
The Big Idea
Your breath is warm and full of invisible water vapor from inside your body. On a cold day, that warm air meets chilly air right outside your mouth. The vapor cools quickly and turns into tiny droplets, like a personal cloud.
Breath Is Warm and Wet
Step one: your breath is warm and wet. Your body is about 37 degrees Celsius, and your lungs add invisible water vapor to the air you breathe out. So each breath is warm and moist.
Cold Air Cools It Fast
Step two: cold air cools it fast. On a cold day, the air outside is much cooler than your breath. The warm, wet breath cools off in a split second, and cool air holds less vapor.
Droplets Form a Cloud
Step three: droplets form. The extra vapor condenses into tiny floating water droplets. Together they make a small cloud that drifts away and fades, as the droplets turn back into vapor.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at your breath! Warm breath carries invisible water vapor out of your body. Cold air cools that vapor down quickly. And the result is a mini cloud right in front of your face.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Breath only shows up when the air is cold enough, and a very damp cold day works best. You also breathe out water vapor on hot days, but it stays invisible. Winter breath is a free science demo. Dress warmly and stay with a grown-up when playing outside in the cold.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! On a cold day, step outside with a grown-up and breathe out slowly. Watch your mini cloud appear. On a warm day, breathe onto a cold glass or mirror instead. Compare what you see, and ask why it fogs up.
Outro
Every cold day, you can make your very own cloud. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
