Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does rain smell so good after a dry spell?

The Big Idea

That fresh smell after rain has a special name. It is called petrichor. It comes from oils made by plants and tiny things living in the soil. When rain lands on dry ground, it kicks those scents into the air.

Dry Spells Store Scents

Step one: scents build up. During dry weather, plants make oils, and some soil microbes make a smelly chemical called geosmin. These scents settle into soil and rocks and wait for rain.

Raindrops Hit the Ground

Step two: raindrops hit the ground. When a drop lands on dry ground, it traps tiny bubbles of air. Those bubbles rise and pop, and puff the scents up into the air.

Your Nose Picks It Up

Step three: your nose picks it up. Wind carries the smell to you, sometimes even before the rain arrives. Humans can notice geosmin in tiny amounts, so your nose is a weather instrument!

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the smell of rain! Plant oils are made by plants during dry weather. Geosmin is a scent made by tiny living things in the soil. And your nose is amazing at spotting it, even in tiny amounts.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Petrichor is the name of the smell. It comes from Greek words for stone and for the blood of the gods. Geosmin is one of the scents behind it. It is also what makes damp soil smell earthy. You may smell rain a little before it arrives. Your nose is a weather instrument!

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! After the next dry spell, go outside with a grown-up when it rains lightly. Take three slow sniffs. Describe the smell in your own words. Then guess where it comes from.
