Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is fog thicker in the morning?

The Big Idea

Fog is often thickest around sunrise, after the coldest part of the night. All night long the ground gives off heat and cools the air near it. By morning, that air can get cold enough to make thick fog.

The Night Cools Down

Step one: the night cools the ground. With no Sun and often a clear sky, heat escapes from the ground into the air above. The coldest time of the night is usually just before sunrise.

Air Hits the Dew Point

Step two: the air reaches its dew point. The dew point is the temperature where air cannot hold its water vapor any longer. By morning, the air near the soil has cooled to that point, so a thick fog of droplets forms.

The Sun Burns It Off

Step three: the Sun warms things up. As sunlight warms the ground and air, the tiny droplets turn back into invisible water vapor. That is why fog often seems to burn off or lift by late morning.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at morning fog! Cold air near the ground is what starts it. The dew point is where vapor becomes droplets. And the warming Sun is what makes the fog fade away.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Fog is most common on clear, calm nights, because heat can escape easily. Valleys and low places often get the thickest fog, because cold air flows downhill and pools there. Sunrise is a fog's favorite stage, and also its exit. When fog is thick, drivers use their low beam lights to see better.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Keep a one-week fog journal. Write down the time the fog appeared. Then write the time it vanished. Look for patterns: when is it thickest?

Outro

Fog is a nighttime cloud that melts away with the Sun. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
