Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do clouds form in the sky?

The Big Idea

A cloud is not a puffy pillow. It is billions of tiny water droplets floating together. The air around you always holds invisible water, called water vapor. A cloud forms when that hidden water turns into something you can see.

Warm Air Rises

Step one: warm air rises. The Sun warms the ground, and the air above it gets warm and light. Like a hot air balloon, it floats up and up into the sky, carrying invisible water vapor with it.

The Air Cools

Step two: the air cools down. The higher it goes, the colder it gets, and cold air cannot hold as much water vapor. So the vapor starts to turn back into liquid water, in drops too tiny to see one by one.

Droplets Gather

Step three: droplets cling to dust. Each tiny droplet or ice crystal grows on a speck of dust in the air. Billions of them together make a cloud you can see.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a cloud! Water vapor is the invisible gas that is always in the air. Droplets are the tiny drops of liquid water that form when vapor cools. And dust specks give each droplet something to cling to.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The droplets in a cloud are so tiny that they float instead of falling. A small puffy cloud can weigh as much as 100 elephants! Your breath on a cold day is a tiny cloud. A cloud looks solid, but it is mostly air, and a plane can fly right through one.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Breathe out slowly onto a cold window. Watch the foggy patch appear. That is a mini cloud factory! Then ask: where did the water come from? Your breath! Clouds in the sky form in a similar way.

Next time you look up, you will know the secret behind every cloud. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
