Intro
Hi, explorers! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do hurricanes grow over warm ocean water?
The Big Idea
A hurricane is like a giant heat engine, and warm ocean water is its fuel. Warm seawater evaporates and rises as moist air. That builds tall storm clouds, and Earth's spin twists them into a spiral. The storm keeps drinking heat from the sea!
Step 1
Step one: the sea is warm. Hurricanes need ocean water warmer than about 80 degrees Fahrenheit, which is about 27 degrees Celsius.
Step 2
Step two: water vapor rises and clouds tower. Warm sea water evaporates into vapor. The moist air rises and cools, building tall clouds and releasing heat.
Step 3
Step three: Earth's spin twists the stack. Earth's turning makes the clouds swirl into a spiral. As long as the engine keeps drinking heat, the storm keeps growing!
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at a hurricane! The warm sea is the fuel tank. The rising air carries heat and moisture upward. The eye is the calm center of the storm. And the rain bands are the spiral arms of heavy rain.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! The eye of a hurricane is weirdly calm, while the wall around it roars. When a hurricane moves over land, it loses its warm-water fuel. Cooler water also starves the engine. If a hurricane is coming, follow official alerts, and never go to watch the surf.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Why does the heat have to come from the sea? What two things can starve the engine? With a grown-up, look up a hurricane map and find the warm water.
