Intro
Hi, explorers! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do harbors need pilots?
The Big Idea
A harbor pilot is a local expert who steps aboard a big ship to guide it through a busy port. The captain knows the ship. The pilot knows every sandbar and current in that one harbor. Together, they get the ship in safely!
Step 1
Step one: a small boat meets the ship. Out at sea, a little pilot boat speeds up beside the giant ship.
Step 2
Step two: the pilot climbs aboard. Pilots often climb a ladder up the ship's side, and they are trained to do it safely. Then local knowledge steers the path through the channel.
Step 3
Step three: tugs may help the ship turn, and then it ties up safe. Powerful tugboats push and pull the ship through tight turns. Finally, thick ropes tie the ship to the dock.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at a harbor arrival! The pilot boat carries the pilot out to the ship. The ladder is how the pilot climbs up the ship's side. The channel is the deep path the ship must follow. And the dock is where the ship finally ties up.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Even the captains of giant ships often take a pilot. Currents, sandbars, and traffic keep changing, so charts alone aren't enough. Pilots usually climb a ladder from a small boat. Stay off docks and ladders, and watch a harbor from a public pier with a grown-up.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Why isn't a good GPS enough? What two kinds of knowledge are being combined? With a grown-up, look at a harbor map and find the channel.
Outro
A harbor is a maze, and a pilot walks it every day. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
