Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a tiny change in heat hurt a whole reef?

The Big Idea

Reef corals live in warm water, but near their heat limit. A little extra warmth for too long can cause bleaching. Because the whole reef community depends on coral, one small change can hurt everyone.

Water Stays a Bit Too Warm

Step one: the water stays a bit too warm. If the sea stays just 1 or 2 degrees Celsius hotter than usual for weeks, corals get stressed. That does not sound like much, but it is enough.

Color Fades

Step two: the algae leave many corals. The same stress happens in thousands of colonies at the same time. The color fades across the reef.

The Whole City Feels It

Step three: fish lose hiding spots, and the whole city feels it. Fish, crabs, and many others depend on the coral for food and homes. When the builders are hurt, everyone is hurt.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a reef under heat stress! A healthy colony is full of color and algae. A pale stretch of reef has lost its algae. And warm water is what pushed it past the limit. A reef is a team. Heat that hits the builders hits everyone.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Small temperature changes are big news when a system is near its limit. One extra hot week can change a whole season of color. Heat waves in the ocean are now more common and longer than before. Kids can help by making less waste, joining cleanups with adults, and learning reef rules.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Let's think about heat. Why would one degree matter more to a reef than to the deep ocean? Who else feels it after the coral fades? How quickly does an ice cube melt in warm water compared with cool water? Remember, small choices add up, with grown-ups to help.
