Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some reefs grow in rings?

The Big Idea

A ring reef is called an atoll. It starts as coral growing around a volcanic island. Over a very long time the island sinks, but the coral keeps growing up, leaving a ring behind.

Coral Grows Around

Step one: coral grows around an island. Corals settle in warm, shallow water around a volcanic island and build a reef.

The Island Sinks

Step two: the island sinks while the reef builds up. Over millions of years, the volcano wears down and sinks. The coral needs sunlight, so it keeps growing upward to stay near the surface.

A Ring Is Left

Step three: a lagoon forms, and a ring is left. A ring of reef now surrounds a shallow pool called a lagoon. From above, it looks like a necklace of coral!

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at how an atoll forms! The volcanic island is where the story begins. The growing reef builds up as the land sinks. The lagoon is the calm pool in the middle. And the atoll ring is all that is left on top. A ring reef is a memory of an island that went under.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The idea is old science from Charles Darwin, who proposed it in the 1800s. Coral is the builder, but the island that started it can disappear. Many atolls are in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. An atoll reef is a living structure, so view it from a boat with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Let's think about rings. Why does the coral keep growing up as the land sinks? What sits in the middle of the ring? Think of a donut. The hole is a lagoon, and the ring is the reef. Remember, reefs are living, so we only look.

Outro

A ring reef is a memory of an island that went under. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
