Intro
Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do anemones look like flowers?
The Big Idea
An anemone looks like a flower, but it is really an animal! It is a close cousin of coral and jellyfish. Its petals are actually stinging tentacles that catch food and pull it to the mouth.
The Anemone Opens
Step one: the anemone opens. It spreads its tentacles wide, like the petals of a flower. It stays in one spot on a rock, waiting patiently for a snack to drift by.
A Small Meal Passes
Step two: a small meal swims by. Pretty petals can fool small fish and shrimp into coming close. Then they brush against the tentacles, and that is a big mistake!
Sting, Hold, and Eat
Step three: sting, hold, and eat. The tentacles have tiny stinging cells that catch the prey. They then pull it to the mouth in the middle.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at an anemone! The tentacles are the stinging petals. The mouth sits in the middle, where food goes in. And the base is the foot that holds on to a rock. Pretty is not the same as safe to touch!
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Clownfish can live safely among anemone tentacles. Anemones are related to corals and jellyfish. Anemones can slowly glide along on their base, but mostly stay put. Don't poke an anemone. The sting can hurt, so look with a grown-up.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Let's think about flowers that hunt. Why would looking like a flower help a hunter? What job do the tentacles do? Draw a flower and an anemone side by side. How are they different? Remember, look but do not touch.
