Intro
Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some algae make the water green?
The Big Idea
Some tiny plant-like drifters, called algae, can fill the water with green. When there are lots of nutrients and strong sunlight, they multiply fast. This is called a bloom. Billions of tiny green specks can tint a whole bay!
Nutrients Arrive
Step one: nutrients arrive. Rivers, rain, and rising cold water can bring nutrients into the sea. Nutrients are like fertilizer for tiny algae.
Sunlight Is Strong
Step two: the sunlight is strong. Algae use sunlight to make their own food, just like plants on land. With lots of sun, they have plenty of energy.
Algae Multiply
Step three: the algae multiply. Each tiny speck has green chlorophyll inside. When billions gather together, the water looks green!
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at two glasses of seawater! Chlorophyll is the green color inside the algae. This is a bloom patch, crowded with tiny algae. And this is clear water with far fewer specks. Green water can be a living crowd, not spilled paint!
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Blooms are so big that satellites can see them from space. Blooms can tint water green, brown, or even red. Some blooms can irritate skin or make shellfish unsafe to eat. Ask a grown-up to check local safety signs before a dip.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Let's think about green water. Why would fertilizer washing into the sea feed a bloom? What color would the water be with fewer specks? Stir a drop of green food coloring into a glass of water. More drops mean what? Remember, green is not always safe soup. Check signs before a dip.
