Why Do Orcas Hunt Together?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do orcas hunt together?

The Big Idea

Orcas are the largest members of the dolphin family, and they live in family groups called pods. Working together, a pod can catch meals that one orca could not. Different pods even have their own hunting recipes!

The Pod Spots Prey

Step one: the pod spots prey. Orcas use sound and sight to find a meal. They talk to each other with clicks and calls.

Herd and Block

Step two: some herd, and others block the exit. Some orcas chase prey into a tight group. Others cut off the escape route. Each orca has a job, and the plan works because everyone does their part.

A Wave Finishes It

Step three: a wave or a rush finishes the plan, and the family shares the meal. Some pods work together to make a wave that washes a seal off the ice. Then the whole family shares the catch.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at an orca pod! The pod is the family that travels together. The leader is often an older female, who remembers where food has been. And the prey is the target of the team's plan.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Orcas are dolphins, not killer monsters looking for boats. Grandmothers often lead the pod. Pods pass down family hunting recipes. And wild orcas are not pets, so watch from a legal distance.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Pick a chore, like tidying a room. Time one person doing it alone, then time a team sharing the jobs. Teamwork wins! Why would a family recipe beat hunting alone? And what can a grandmother remember that a calf cannot?
