Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why doesn't an anemone sting a clownfish?

The Big Idea

A sea anemone has tentacles with stinging cells that can sting most fish. But a clownfish wears a special coat of mucus, which is a kind of slime. That coat keeps the anemone from firing its stingers at its guest.

A Gentle Rub

Step one: the fish rubs the anemone gently. A young clownfish carefully brushes against the tentacles, a little at a time. It takes patience, because one wrong touch could still sting.

A Special Coat

Step two: a special coat builds. Scientists think the slime coat does not trigger the stinging cells, or it smells like the anemone itself. They are still studying exactly how it works.

A Safe Home

Step three: the fish hides in the tentacles. The clownfish gets a safe home, and it can hide from hunters. In return, it helps shoo away some pests and leaves tasty scraps for the anemone. Both partners gain!

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the guest pass! The clownfish is the guest. Its mucus coat is the pass. And the tentacles are the anemone's stinging home.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The partnership is a team effort, not magic. Without the right coat, a clownfish could get stung. A clownfish may stay in one anemone for much of its life. And wild reef animals should stay on the reef, so take photos instead of grabbing.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Slip a glove over your hand, and think about how it protects you. A coat can be a barrier. Now ask: what would happen if the slime coat washed off? And why would a host want a guest?

Outro

The sting stays off because the guest wears the right coat. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
