Intro
Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a pufferfish puff up?
The Big Idea
When a pufferfish feels danger, it gulps water very fast. Its stretchy belly swells like a balloon, and its spines stick straight out. A big, spiky ball is much harder to bite than a small snack!
A Hunter Comes Close
Step one: a hunter comes close. A pufferfish is a slow swimmer, so it cannot easily outrun a hungry fish. Instead, it uses an emergency trick.
It Gulps Water
Step two: the fish gulps water. It sucks in water so fast that its stretchy stomach swells into a ball. Its skin is very loose and stretchy, so it can grow to several times its normal size.
Spines Stand Out
Step three: the spines stand out. As the body puffs, the spines point outward, and the fish looks big and prickly. The hunter backs off, and later the puffer lets the water out and swims away.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at a puff! At normal size, a puffer is small and easy to swallow. Then it takes a big gulp of water. And now it is puffed up, round, and spiky.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! A puffer's stomach is super stretchy, built just for puffing. Many puffers carry a toxin, so never eat a wild one. Puffing takes lots of energy, and it is risky for the fish. So never poke or squeeze a puffer to make it puff up.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Blow up a balloon, and measure it before and after. That is how much a puffer can grow! Watch a video of a puffer instead of catching one. Why would getting big and spiky beat swimming away? And what is the fish swallowing?

A puff is an emergency costume, not a party trick. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
