Intro
Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why can a starfish grow an arm back?
The Big Idea
A starfish is really called a sea star, because it is not a fish. If a sea star loses an arm, special cells can rebuild it. It is slow, taking weeks or months! A few kinds can even grow a whole new body from one arm and a piece of the center.
The Wound Seals
Step one: the wound seals. A sea star may drop an arm to escape a hungry hunter. Then its body closes the spot, so germs stay out.
New Cells Pile Up
Step two: new cells pile up. Special cells at the wound keep dividing. They gather into a tiny bump called a bud.
A Bud Becomes an Arm
Step three: the bud turns into an arm. Slowly, it grows longer, and tiny tube feet grow back underneath. Tube feet are the little feet it uses to walk and grip. After many months, the arm is ready!
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at regrowing an arm! First, an arm is lost. Next, a small new bud begins to grow. Finally, the arm is regrown. But the living center must stay. A torn-off tip alone often cannot rebuild.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Dropping an arm can help it escape a hunter. Regrowing takes months, not a magic snap. A few kinds can grow a new body from one arm. And sea stars have no brain, just nerves all through their arms!
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! At a tide pool with a grown-up, look gently. Never touch or pull a sea star. Count its arms. Can you spot a short one still growing? Why would growing an arm be worth the energy? And what must stay in one piece for the rebuild to work?
Outro
A spare arm is a repair plan, not a reason to pull one off. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
