Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a hermit crab wear a shell?

The Big Idea

A hermit crab's back end is soft. It slides into an empty snail shell and carries the house along. The shell protects it, like a borrowed suit of armor. That is why a hermit crab is always on the lookout for a new home.

The Tail Is Soft

Step one: the tail is soft. A hermit crab has a hard front, but a soft curled tail. That soft part needs a cover. The hermit crab's soft tail curls to fit the spiral of the shell.

It Finds an Empty Shell

Step two: it finds an empty shell. The crab picks an empty shell left by a sea snail. It tests the size before moving in. Special hooks on the tail grab the inside of the shell, so it does not fall out.

A Bigger Shell Means a Move

Step three: a bigger shell means a move. As the crab grows, its shell gets tight. It finds a roomier shell, and sometimes crabs trade with each other. The shell also keeps in water and keeps out the dry air.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a hermit crab! The soft abdomen tucks inside. The snail shell is a borrowed house. And the claws block the door.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Never take live hermit crabs from a beach as souvenirs. Never pull a hermit out of its shell. Hermit crabs sometimes line up for a trade. If a grown-up keeps one, it must give extra shells.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Look at empty shells on the beach. Compare their sizes. Which would fit a bigger crab? Why does the crab need a used shell, instead of growing its own armor? Scientists are kind to animals and homes. Happy exploring!
