Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a seahorse look like a horse?

The Big Idea

A seahorse is a fish in disguise. Its long snout sips tiny food, and its curled tail holds on to seagrass. Bony plates replace regular scales. That is why a seahorse looks like a horse, but it is really a fish.

A Long Snout

Step one: a long snout. A seahorse has a tube-shaped snout, like a straw. It sips up tiny shrimp and other small foods. A seahorse has a small fin on its back that flutters very quickly.

Bony Plates Armor It

Step two: bony plates armor the body. Instead of scales, it has rings of bony plates. They protect it but still let it curl. Its head is angled like a horse's head, so it can feed from the water in front of it.

The Tail Grabs

Step three: the tail grabs. A seahorse swims slowly with a tiny fin on its back. So its curled tail grips seagrass to hold it steady. It does not have a stomach, so it needs to eat almost all day.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a seahorse! The snout sips food. The dorsal fin fans fast to push it along. Bony plates cover the body. And the gripping tail holds on to seagrass.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Seagrass beds are nurseries, so do not trample them. In many seahorse species, the father carries the babies. Never buy dried seahorses. Seahorses are some of the slowest swimmers in the sea.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Look at a picture of a seahorse. Draw how its tail curls. Curl a piece of string around a pencil. Why would a gripping tail beat a fast tail here? Scientists look closely at what animals use their bodies for. Happy exploring!
