Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does the shore keep changing?

The Big Idea

Waves, tides, storms, and rivers all move sand. A beach is a pile in motion. Today's beach is last year's sand, just passing through! Beaches change on calm days and on stormy days, all through the year.

Waves Lift Sand

Step one: waves lift the sand. Moving water picks up tiny grains from the beach. Then currents carry those grains along the shore. The sand is not disappearing for good. It is traveling to somewhere else along the coast.

Storms and Rivers

Step two: storms and rivers join in. Big storm waves take bigger bites out of the beach. Rivers add fresh sand, so sand arrives as well as leaves. Winter storms often pull sand out to sea, while gentle summer waves can push it back in.

The Line Shifts

Step three: the shoreline shifts. Season after season, the water's edge moves a little. A map of the coast is only a snapshot, not forever. Scientists and map makers measure shorelines again and again to see how they have moved.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a beach! The dune is a hill of sand that shields the land. Dry sand sits above the high tide. A breaking wave lifts and moves sand. Wet sand is where the tide has been. And a river mouth adds new sand.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Waves can move sand up, down, and along the beach. Dunes are a shield, so stay off the protected ones. Do not climb crumbly cliffs. The beach you see today will look different next year.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Pile some sand in a baking tray. Tilt the tray and pour water gently over the pile. Watch where the sand goes. What would happen if the waves stopped? Scientists ask questions and test them. Happy exploring!
