Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are there waves?

The Big Idea

Wind pushes on the surface of the water. That push travels across the sea as a wave. The water mostly bobs up and down, but the wave's shape moves forward. So the next time you see a wave, remember that you are watching energy travel!

Wind Rubs the Water

Step one: wind rubs the water. As wind slides across the sea, it drags the surface along. Tiny ripples appear, and the push begins. Wind that blows longer, harder, and over more water makes bigger waves.

The Shape Travels

Step two: the shape travels. Longer, stronger winds make ripples grow into waves. Each bit of water just bobs and circles, while the wave's shape moves on. Think of a stadium wave, where people stand up and sit down, but nobody runs around the stadium.

The Shore Makes It Break

Step three: the shore makes it break. Near the beach, the bottom slows the wave down. The top tumbles over, and the wave breaks into foam. A tall wave in deep water is very different from a small one that slaps on the shore.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a wave! Wind pushes the surface of the water. Under the surface, water moves in little circles. And at the shore, the wave breaks.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Most ocean waves are made by wind. A storm far away can send long waves called swells to your beach. The water itself mostly bobs in place. Never turn your back on big surf. Ask a grown-up first!

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Fill a pan with water and float a cork or a small toy on it. Blow gently across the surface. Watch the toy. Does it race ahead, or bob? Why do bigger winds make bigger waves? Scientists test things many times to be sure. Try it again!

Outro

The water bobs, and the shape races to shore! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
