What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why can you be a timekeeper too?
The Big Idea
Do you need a canyon to do real time science? Nope! Measuring your street tree each spring is real time science. Repeat, date it, and write it down, and you've built a personal clock!
Step 1
Step 1: pick one thing to watch. Choose something that changes slowly, like a tree on your street, a plant, or your own height. Ask a grown-up before you go near a road. Safety comes first.
Step 2
Step 2: pick a repeat date. Choose a day you can remember, like the first day of spring, or your birthday. Measure on that same day each time. That keeps the test fair.
Step 3
Step 3: measure or sketch, then write the year. Wrap a tape around the trunk, or sketch the shape. Write the date and the year, and put the notebook away safely. Next spring, it will be waiting for you.
A Closer Look
Here is a page from a tree notebook. In May of one year, the tree is small. A year later, it's taller with a thicker trunk. The notebook shows the change, with both dates. Now you can compare, just like a scientist.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! 10 years of one tree is a dataset, a pile of evidence. A door-frame pencil mark is a family clock. This isn't only a chore chart. It's evidence that you grew beside the tree. Scientists do this too, checking the same places for many years. Repeat visits show slow change.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Ask: what would you measure once a year? And ask: why does the date make a mark scientific? Try it at home: mark your height on a door frame. Write today's date, and check again next year. Your clock is now ticking!
