Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. WHY ARE INDEXES AND CATALOGS USEFUL?
The Big Idea
Imagine a drawer full of rocks and bones, and nobody knows where any of them came from. A find without a number is a story that can get lost. A catalog keeps the memory, even when people change. An index helps you find things fast. Together, they turn a messy drawer into a library.
Step 1
Number one: give it a number. Each find gets its own number, like a name tag. The number is written on the object and on a card.
Step 2
Number two: write the place, date, and team. The card says where it was found, when, and who found it. Without the place, the find loses most of its meaning.
Step 3
Number three: photograph and file it. A photo is taken, and the card is filed with the object. Later, anyone can find it fast, using the index.
A Closer Look
Let's look at one catalog card. The specimen number is its ID. The site says where it was found. And the date says when. Together they keep the story whole!
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Big museums keep millions of items, so good records are a must. The label is part of the science, and it's not just busywork. An index is like a map of a book. It tells you where to look. If you ever give an object to a museum, tell them where it was found.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, give five of your toys or rocks their own numbers. Make a little card for each one. Then ask, what two facts must a catalog line hold? And why isn't a photo enough alone?
