Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. WHY DO MUSEUMS USE CASTS?

The Big Idea

Have you seen a giant dinosaur skeleton in a museum? Some of those bones might be copies! A cast is a hard copy of a shape. The original can stay safe while the copy is on display, or travels, or is touched in class. Let's see how a cast is made.

Step 1

Number one: the original is molded. First, the fossil is coated with a soft, rubbery material that captures every bump and groove. When it hardens, it forms a mold.

Step 2

Number two: a copy is poured. Next, liquid plaster or plastic goes inside the mold. When it sets, out comes a copy with all the same details.

Step 3

Number three: the copy is mounted. The cast can be checked, painted, and put on a strong stand for everyone to see. Meanwhile, the real fossil rests safely where scientists can study it.

A Closer Look

Let's compare the three things. The original is the real fossil, kept safe. The mold is the negative shape that catches every bump. And the cast is the copy that you can see and share.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Casts let one famous skeleton stand in many cities at once. Only the original holds tiny clues like chemistry that a cast can't copy. Honest museum signs say when something is a cast. Casts can travel to schools, where kids can even touch them.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Press a coin into modeling clay, and lift it out. That's a mold! Now press fresh clay into it, or ask a grown-up to pour plaster. That's a cast! Then ask, what does a cast keep? And what can only the original still hold? Ask a museum guide which bones are real.

Casts share amazing finds with the world, while the real fossils stay safe! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
