Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. WHY ARE THE FIRST PEOPLE NOT ONE SINGLE TRIBE?

The Big Idea

It's easy to picture the first people as one big group. But that's not what scientists found. Early people lived in many places, in many small groups. Each group had its own home, its own tools, and its own stories. So we say first peoples, with an s.

Step 1

Number one: many places. Early people lived in deserts, forests, mountains, and along coasts. Each place needed different skills.

Step 2

Number two: many ideas. Different groups made different tools, and used what was nearby. Sometimes they shared ideas, and sometimes they invented them separately.

Step 3

Number three: many stories. Each group had its own songs, art, and customs. That's why scientists talk about many first peoples, and not one single tribe.

A Closer Look

Let's see how scientists tell groups apart. Maps show where each group lived. The groups themselves were made of families and friends. And their tools and art are clues to how they lived.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Scientists think modern humans spread to nearly every continent, except Antarctica, long before farming began. Every group adds a piece to the puzzle of human history. Trade and friendships linked many groups that lived far apart. And many communities today still share stories from their ancestors.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, find a world map. Point to three very different places, like a desert, a forest, and a coast. Would people in each place need the same tools? What might be different?
