Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is soil more than dirt?
The Big Idea
Dirt is just soil in the wrong place, like on your shoes. But real soil is much more! Soil is a mix of tiny rock bits, dead plant and animal bits, air, water, and billions of living things. Soil is alive, and it grows our food! Let's see how it is made.
Step 1
Step one: rock breaks into bits. Wind, water, and ice slowly crumble rock into sand, silt, and clay. This takes a very long time. Making one centimeter of soil can take hundreds of years.
Step 2
Step two: plants and animals add life. Fallen leaves, roots, and dead creatures get eaten by worms, bugs, and tiny microbes. They turn into dark, rich humus that feeds plants.
Step 3
Step three: layers build up. Over time, soil forms layers. Dark topsoil is on top, and lighter subsoil below. Below that is broken-up rock, and then solid bedrock.
A Closer Look
Let's look at a slice of soil. Topsoil, the dark top layer, is full of roots and worms. Subsoil below has more minerals and fewer living things. Then comes broken rock. And finally, solid bedrock at the bottom.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! A spoonful of healthy soil can hold more living things than there are people on Earth. Most are too small to see. It can take hundreds of years to make one centimeter of soil. Nearly all the food we eat needs soil to grow. Grown-up note: wash your hands after touching soil.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Try this with a grown-up. Fill a clear jar with garden soil and water, shake it, and let it settle. Watch the layers of sand, silt, and clay form. Which layer settles first?
Outro
So soil is much more than dirt. It's a living mix of rock bits, air, water, and life. Amazing, right? Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
