Mountain Maker! Why Does a Volcano Make a Mountain?

Video · 2:10 · Crafty Clover explains, from A Million Whys Book 5

A volcano forms when melted rock from inside Earth pushes up through the surface. Each eruption spreads lava and ash, and over time, layer after layer builds up into a mountain. So

Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a volcano make a mountain?

The Big Idea

A volcano is a place where melted rock from deep inside Earth comes out onto the surface. That hot melted rock cools and hardens. Then more comes out, and it piles up again and again. Layer by layer, it builds a mountain. Let's see how!

Step 1

Step one: melted rock rises. Deep underground, rock gets so hot it melts into magma. Magma is lighter than solid rock, so it slowly rises. Gas in the magma helps push it up.

Step 2

Step two: it finds a weak spot and erupts. Magma pushes up through a crack in the rock, called a pipe. At the top, it bursts out of the crater. Once it's above ground, we call it lava.

Step 3

Step three: the lava cools and piles up. Lava cools and hardens into new rock. The next eruption adds another layer on top. After thousands of eruptions, a cone becomes a mountain!

A Closer Look

Let's peek inside a volcano. Down below is the magma chamber, where melted rock collects. The pipe is the tunnel that magma travels up. At the top is the crater, the bowl-shaped opening. And lava flows down the outside, cooling into new rock.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The Hawaiian Islands are volcanoes that grew up from the seafloor. In 1943, a volcano called Paricutin popped up in a farmer's field in Mexico, and grew tall in just one year. New land can appear from a volcano, even in the middle of the ocean. Grown-up note: never visit an active volcano without official guides.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Build a mountain with a grown-up. Slowly pour dry sand through a funnel onto a tray. Watch a cone grow, layer by layer. What job does gas do? And why does a volcano need a weak spot?

Outro

A volcano builds a mountain the slow, hot way, one eruption at a time. Amazing, right? Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
