Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is "index fossil" a useful nickname?
The Big Idea
An index fossil is a special kind of fossil that works like a date stamp in the rock! It comes from an animal that lived for only a short time, but lived in many places. So when we find it, we know about how old that rock layer is. Let's see why!
Step 1
Step one: the animal lived in many places. An index fossil animal spread across lots of oceans, so its fossils turn up all around the world. That makes it easy to find and compare.
Step 2
Step two: it lived for only a short time. It appeared, spread out, and then disappeared again, all in a small window of time. So each fossil is like a stamp for that window.
Step 3
Step three: match the layer, and read the clock. If two rock layers on different hills hold the same index fossil, scientists think they are about the same age. The fossil works like a clock!
A Closer Look
Let's look at a slice of rock. The fossil lives in just one thin layer. That's its short time range. You can find the same fossil in many places. That layer is the rock layer we are dating. And the date window tells us about how old it is.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Trilobites and ammonites are classic index fossils. A tiny shell can help date a whole hillside! One fossil is a hint, but a set of fossils is better. A species that lived for a very long time makes a poor clock, because it can't tell one time from another.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Play the date-stamp game. Imagine a stamp used for one week only, and another used for a whole year. Which one tells you the date more exactly? So why would a long-lived species make a worse clock?

A little fossil with a short life can tell a big story about time. That's a great nickname! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
