Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do trackways count as fossils too?

The Big Idea

A fossil is any clue left behind by ancient life. It doesn't have to be a bone! Footprints can be fossils, too. A line of footprints is called a trackway. It's a walk that turned to stone! Let's find out how.

Step 1

Step one: an animal steps in soft, wet mud. Mud takes a print, just like wet sand at the beach. When the foot lifts away, the shape stays behind.

Step 2

Step two: sand and mud cover the print and fill it in. Layer after layer piles on top. Over a very long time, the pressure squeezes it into solid rock. Now the print is kept safe!

Step 3

Step three: the rock wears away, and there is the track! Scientists follow the walk, measure it, and photograph it. They can tell where the animal went!

A Closer Look

Let's look at a trackway from above. One footprint is called a print. The space from one print to the next is the stride. And the line the prints make shows which direction the animal went.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Bones tell us who lived there. Tracks tell us what they were doing. Long, spread-out strides can mean an animal was running, and short strides mean walking. Some trackways show many animals side by side, so scientists think they may have travelled together. Boardwalks keep visitors off real prints. And photos are better than peeling stone!

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Make a trackway. Press your hand or foot into playdough or damp sand. Walk across it once, then take a big leap, and compare your strides. What can a line of prints tell you that one bone cannot?

Outro

A trackway is a moment from long ago, kept in stone, and a walk we can still follow today! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
