Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is the same fossil sometimes found on two continents?

The Big Idea

Long ago, lands that are far apart today were joined or close together. Animals and plants lived across them, and left the same kinds of fossils. Later, the ground slowly moved apart, and the fossils rode along on each piece.

Shared Land

Step one: a shared land. Scientists think that many lands were once joined in a supercontinent. Plants and animals could spread across all of it.

Fossils Form

Step two: fossils form. When plants or animals die, some become fossils in the rock. The same kinds of fossils are buried in matching rocks.

Land Splits

Step three: the land splits. Huge slabs of the Earth's crust move very slowly. Over millions of years, the land splits, and oceans open up. Now the same fossils are on two shores.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the fit! The continents were joined once. Now they are split apart. Fossil ferns match on both sides. And bones of the same kind are found on both shores.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A scientist named Alfred Wegener used fossils as clues for drifting continents. Matching rocks and matching fossils make the idea stronger. The animals did not swim across an ocean on purpose. The ground moved. Some museum maps show how the old lands fit.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! What two clues make the split idea stronger? Why would a desert fossil match a faraway forest fossil's cousin? Look at a world map, and see which coasts look like puzzle pieces. Draw the continents on paper, and cut them out to fit together.

Outro

Fossils on two continents are a puzzle piece that helps us picture a moving Earth. Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
