Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why did the non-bird dinosaurs disappear?

The Big Idea

Scientists think a giant space rock hit the Earth about 66 million years ago. It caused huge changes to the air, the light, and the food. Most of the big animals, including all the dinosaurs that were not birds, died out. But birds survived, and they are still here today.

The Rock Hits

Step one: a giant rock hits. The space rock landed near the Yucatan, in what is now Mexico. It made a huge blast, and dust and fires spread far away. Scientists have found the crater.

The Sky Darkens

Step two: the sky darkens. Dust and smoke blocked much of the sunlight. Plants need light to grow, so many plants died back or grew slowly. That was a big problem for the plant-eaters.

Food Runs Out

Step three: the food runs out. When plants failed, the plant-eaters went hungry, and then the hunters that ate them did too. Big animals need lots of food, so they had the hardest time.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the clue layer! In rocks around the world, there is a thin layer of clay. It holds a chemical fingerprint from the impact. Rock above it is newer, and rock below it is older. And birds are the dinosaurs that survived.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Extinct does not mean it never existed. It means none are left. Volcanoes and a changing climate also stressed the world. After the crash, small furry mammals had room to grow and change. Birds are still here today. Look outside and say hello!

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Why do plants suffer first when the sky gets dark? Why might a tiny bird last when a giant cannot? What worldwide clue is still sitting in the rock? Go outside, and count how many birds you can spot.

Outro

The story of the dinosaurs is still being told, and every bird is part of it. Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
