Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is a chicken a clue about dinosaurs?

The Big Idea

Scientists think that birds are living dinosaurs. A chicken is not a T. Rex, but it still carries some of the family features, like a wishbone, scales on its feet, and feathers. That makes it a great clue! Let us follow the family tree back in time.

Small Feathered Hunters

Step one: small feathered hunters. Fossils of feathered dinosaurs have been found. Some were about the size of a chicken, or even smaller. They sit on the branch of the family tree that leads to birds.

Shared Bones

Step two: shared bones. Many dinosaur fossils have a wishbone, and so does a chicken. Scientists compare the shapes of the bones. Matching parts point to a shared family. The more parts that match, the stronger the clue.

Birds Branch Off

Step three: the birds branch off. When the big dinosaurs disappeared, some small feathered ones lived on. Those became today's birds. So chickens, pigeons, and even penguins are on that branch.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the clue! A chicken has a wishbone in its chest. It has feathers. And scales on its feet. A feathered dinosaur relative had similar features.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A chicken cannot prove every dinosaur fact. It shows the family link. Please do not chase wild birds to study dinosaurs. Museum skeletons show matching bones side by side. After dinner, look at the leftover bones with a grown-up. It is real science!

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Which chicken part looks like a dinosaur leftover? What could a feathered fossil add to the chicken clue? Why is a relative not the same as a clone? Draw a family tree with a chicken on one branch.
