Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why were baby dinosaurs not just tiny adults?

The Big Idea

A baby dinosaur was not just a mini copy of its parent. Its head, teeth, and legs could have different shapes, and it had different jobs to do: grow fast, hide, and eat soft food. Over time, its body changed as it grew up.

Egg Hatches

Step one: an egg hatches. A new hatchling was very small next to its parent. Young animals often have a big head and big eyes for their body size. Then the growing begins.

The Shape Shifts

Step two: the shape shifts. As a dinosaur grew, its proportions changed. A rounder baby head could become a longer, stronger one, and horns or crests could grow in. Legs and body changed shape, too.

Teeth and Rings

Step three: teeth change, and bones add rings. Teeth could change too, so a young hunter might have eaten different food than an adult. Thin slices of bone show growth rings, like tree rings, that help scientists tell how old an animal was.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at growth! Here are three skulls, from a baby to a teenager to an adult. Bone slices show growth rings. And the shapes change as an animal grows up.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Two fossils that look different can be one kind of animal at two ages. Nests and bone beds help match babies to parents. How fast an animal grew is a clue about how it lived. Museum babies are often casts, so read the age label.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! If two skulls look different, what else should you check before naming two species? What job might a baby have that an adult does not? How can a growth ring help? Compare your baby photos with a photo of you now. How have your proportions changed?

Every dinosaur changed as it grew, just like you do. Keep growing your curiosity! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
