Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why were some dinosaurs so small?
The Big Idea
Not all dinosaurs were giants. Many were only the size of a chicken or a dog. Small bodies need less food, can hide in bushes, and can dart away fast. Size is a tool, not a score. Small was a smart plan!
Food Is Limited
Step one: food can be limited. Some places did not have enough plants or prey to feed a giant. A smaller animal needs much less food, so it can live there.
Small Body Wins
Step two: a small body needs less fuel. A small hunter could catch bugs and lizards. A small plant-eater needed fewer leaves. Less fuel needed means an easier life in a place with little food.
Hide and Dart
Step three: hide and dart. A small dinosaur could tuck into thick bushes where a giant hunter could not follow. And small legs can change direction fast, so it could dart away from danger.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at size! A tiny dinosaur, about the size of a chicken. A kid for comparison. And a giant plant-eater towering over them. Dinosaurs came in all sizes!
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Movies love giants, but real dinosaurs came in every size. Chickens are a living clue that small dinosaur-relatives can be successful. Scientists check growth rings in bones to tell a baby from a small adult. Museum models are often smaller than the real animal, so read the size label.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Name one job a small dinosaur could do that a giant could not. Draw a small dinosaur next to a giant and a kid, and label who is who. What clue would prove a fossil is an adult, not a baby? And why do you think films skip the small ones?
