Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do minnows hide in weeds?

The Big Idea

Minnows hide in weeds because the weeds keep them safe! Minnows are small, so bigger fish, birds, and turtles love to eat them. A thick patch of plants gives them cover, shade, and food all in one spot. Weeds are a minnow's safety blanket.

Danger Is Everywhere

Step one: small fish have many hunters. Bigger fish swim below, and herons and kingfishers watch from above. A minnow in open water is easy to spot. It needs somewhere to disappear.

Weeds Make a Maze

Step two: the weeds make a green maze. Thick stems and leaves break up the view, and big fish can't swim in easily. A minnow slips between the stems with ease. Hiding is easy when you're small.

Shade and Snacks

Step three: the weeds give shade and snacks. The plants cast cool shade, and tiny insects and algae live on the stems. That's a dinner table next to the hideout. Minnows also stay in a school, so many eyes watch for danger.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a weedy home! Tall stems block the view. Shade keeps the water cool. And a school of minnows moves together, so there are lots of watchful eyes.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Minnows are an important food for herons, bigger fish, and turtles. Water plants add oxygen to the water, and fish need that to breathe. Please leave pond plants in place, since they hold up a whole community. If you catch minnows with a grown-up, return every one to the same spot.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, look at a weedy pond edge from the bank. Do the minnows stay near the weeds or in the open? What happens if your shadow falls on the water? Draw a minnow and its weedy hideout.
