Why Do Tadpoles Lose Their Tails?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do tadpoles lose their tails?

The Big Idea

A tadpole's tail doesn't fall off. Its body slowly uses it up! The tail is a swimming tool, and a froglet doesn't need it. As the frog grows legs, the body breaks the tail down and reuses the pieces for energy. Nothing goes to waste!

Swimmer with a Tail

Step one: a tadpole swims with its tail. A tadpole has gills and a long, flat tail. It wiggles the tail from side to side to glide through the pond and gobble algae. The tail is its engine.

Legs and Lungs

Step two: legs and lungs grow in. As the tadpole grows, back legs appear first, then front legs. Its insides change too, and lungs grow for breathing air. A tadpole slowly becomes a froglet.

The Tail Shrinks

Step three: the tail shrinks away. Now the body breaks the tail down piece by piece and uses it as food for energy. A froglet doesn't eat much during this time, so that stored fuel is very helpful. Soon it hops out of the water.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a growing frog! Legs grow out of the sides of the body. The tail gets shorter every day. And the froglet is ready to hop and breathe air.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! This big body change is called metamorphosis. It can take weeks or months, depending on the kind of frog. Tadpoles that become froglets keep a tiny stub for just a short time. Look, don't grab. Tadpoles are delicate, and their pond is their home.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, visit a pond in spring and look for tadpoles. Which tadpoles have long tails, and which have short ones? Can you spot any legs yet? Draw a tadpole, a tadpole with legs, and a froglet.
