Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do night hikers stay together?
The Big Idea
Staying together is how you get the story home. A group shares lights, maps, and the job of watching. Teamwork is a science tool, and detectives do not wander off alone. Hiking in the dark is a team sport, and every member matters.
Set a Turnaround Time
Step one: set a turnaround time. Before you start, the group picks a time to turn back. Home has a time, and everyone knows it. Wearing bright or reflective clothes helps everyone see each other.
Count Heads
Step two: count heads. A grown-up counts everyone often, because the dark hides holes and turns. If someone stops, the whole line pauses. Younger kids walk where a grown-up can see them at all times.
Share the Tools
Step three: share the tools. Two lights beat one dead battery, and a whistle is for help from far away. One grown-up at the front and one at the back make sure nobody gets lost. Before leaving, tell someone at home your route and when you plan to be back.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at a night team! Two kids side by side can keep each other company. A spare light helps if one battery dies. A map shows the way back. And grown-ups at the front and back keep the group together!
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Do not run ahead to see something first. If you need to tie a shoe, the whole line pauses. A whistle is for help, not for jokes. One adult at the front and one at the back beats a clump that loses the last kid.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Plan a pretend night hike with a grown-up. What fails first if the group splits? Which tool is hardest to share from far away? Why is a turnaround time part of the experiment? And how will you stay together?
