Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do raccoons look so busy after dark?

The Big Idea

Raccoons are night-shift generalists, which means they eat almost anything. Dark hours mean fewer people and some easier prey. Their super-sensitive front paws can feel for food, like extra eyes.

Day Rests

Step one: the day rests. During the day, a raccoon usually sleeps in a den, a hollow tree, or another cozy cavity. It stays safe and quiet until dusk.

Dusk Starts the Shift

Step two: dusk starts the shift. When the light fades, the raccoon wakes up and heads out to find food. Cooler, darker hours mean fewer people around.

Paws Search

Step three: the paws search. A raccoon's front paws are very sensitive, so it can feel around in a stream or a garden for crayfish, fruit, and seeds. Dipping food in water is not always washing. It is often feeling it better.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a raccoon! Sensitive paws feel for food in the dark. The dark mask may help cut glare. A stream is a good place to search with wet paws. And the den is where the raccoon rests by day!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Do not feed raccoons. Bold animals cause trouble. Lock your trash, which is kinder than a fight later. Never corner a raccoon, because they can bite. If a raccoon is out at noon and acting odd, tell a grown-up to call animal control, and do not handle it.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Think about a yard visitor. If a raccoon visits your yard, what invited it? What job are the paws doing in the dark? What should a family change at the trash can? And look for paw tracks in the morning, with a grown-up.
