Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do beavers build dams?

The Big Idea

A dam is a beaver's tool for making deep, still water. Beavers are nature's engineers. Their pond is a safe home that protects the family, like a moat around a castle.

Sticks and Mud Stack Up

Step one: sticks and mud stack up. A beaver carries sticks, mud, and stones to a shallow stream and packs them into a wall. The wall slows the water down. Beavers patch leaks whenever they hear water trickling through.

Water Backs Up

Step two: the water backs up. Behind the dam, the stream spreads out into a deep, calm pond. That pond also helps frogs, ducks, fish, and wet plants, so lots of animals get a new home.

The Lodge Is Built

Step three: the lodge is built. The beavers build a lodge of sticks with a dry room inside and a door that is hidden under the water. Enemies have a hard time reaching it, and in winter the family can swim under the ice to their food.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a beaver pond! The dam holds back the water and makes the pond. The lodge is the family's dry home. The underwater door keeps the entrance hidden and safe. And the pond is the deep moat that protects everyone!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Fresh chew marks on trees mean beavers are working nearby. Do not crawl on a dam. It can collapse, and the water behind it is deep. Never feed wild beavers. Dams and lodges are homes, not playgrounds, so watch from a stream trail with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Imagine a stream with no dam. If the dam vanished, what would happen to the water depth? Why is an underwater door so handy for a beaver? What other animals might use the new pond? And what clues tell you beavers live nearby?

Outro

Beavers show us that animals can change the land to make a safe home. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
