Intro
Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a stream make a bubbling sound?
The Big Idea
Moving water slams into rocks and folds over itself! Air gets trapped in the water and pops. Those pops, plus the rush of the water, are the stream's voice. Fast water is noisy water.
Water Runs Downhill
Step one: water runs downhill. Gravity pulls the stream downhill, and fast water has extra energy. Slow, deep water is much quieter. The faster it goes, the more it can do.
Rocks Stand in the Way
Step two: rocks stand in the way, and the flow folds and splashes. The path is lumpy. Rocks break the flow into splashes, and the water folds over itself and traps air. Air gets trapped in the water.
Bubbles Pop, Ears Hear
Step three: bubbles pop, and your ears hear a gurgle. Tiny bursts of sound come from every popping bubble. All of them together make a gurgle. A steep, rocky stretch is louder than a flat, sandy one. The creek is talking physics!
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at a riffle, a rocky, bubbly part of a stream! A rock sits in the way of the water. The water splashes and traps air in bubbles. And downstream, a quiet pool is much calmer.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Slippery rocks hide under pretty water, so hold a grown-up's hand. After rain, a quiet creek can roar and rise fast. Never jump from rock to rock in a swollen stream. Stay off wet logs over deep water, and listen from the bank if the current is strong.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, compare a rocky riffle and a still pool. Which was louder? What was trapping the air? Close your eyes and listen to the gurgles.
