Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do frogs start as tadpoles?

The Big Idea

A tadpole is a frog's water-baby shape! Frog eggs are laid in water, so the first body is built for swimming and eating pond food. Later it rebuilds itself for life on land. That big change is called metamorphosis.

Eggs in Water

Step one: eggs in water. A frog lays a jelly-like cluster of eggs in a pond. The water keeps the eggs wet and safe. Soon, tiny tadpoles start to grow inside.

Tadpole Hatches, Legs Bud

Step two: a tadpole hatches, and its legs bud. The tadpole has gills and a tail, which work well in water. Then little back legs start to bud, and the rebuild begins. Some tadpoles eat plants, and some eat tiny animals.

Tail Shrinks, Froglet Leaves

Step three: the tail shrinks, and a froglet leaves the water. Lungs grow and legs get strong. The tail doesn't fall off like a toy. The body recycles it, bit by bit. Then a tiny froglet hops onto land. Legs and lungs work on land!

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at metamorphosis! First, an egg hatches into a swimming tadpole. Then back legs grow, and the tail starts shrinking. And finally a froglet is ready to hop.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Don't scoop a whole class of tadpoles into a jar to keep. Pond water in a classroom needs a grown-up plan, and a way home. Some tadpoles eat plants, and some eat tiny animals. Wash your hands after pond dipping, and leave most eggs where you found them.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, look in a pond or at photos of one. Which body parts are for water? Which body parts are for land? Draw the stages of a frog's life.

Outro

Tadpoles rebuild themselves into frogs, and that's pure magic! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
