Why Does a Compass Point North?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a compass point north?

The Big Idea

Earth is a giant magnet! A compass needle is a tiny magnet that can spin freely. It lines up with Earth's magnetic field, so one end points near geographic north. That's how it finds the way.

Earth Has a Field

Step one: Earth has a magnetic field. Invisible lines of magnetism wrap all the way around our planet. You can't see them, but a compass can feel them. Earth's field is weak, but it's always there.

The Needle Can Spin, the Field Tugs

Step two: the needle can spin, and the field tugs on it. The needle sits on a tiny pin so it can turn freely. Opposite magnetic poles attract, so Earth's field tugs the needle into line. The magnet lines up!

Red End Settles, Hiker Reads the Map

Step three: the red end settles, and the hiker reads the map. The needle stops when it lines up, and its north-seeking end points toward north. Now a hiker can match the needle to the map. Now the direction is known!

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a compass! The needle is a tiny magnet that spins freely. The magnetic field of Earth tugs on it. And the hiker uses the needle together with a map.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Metal tables and phones can pull a needle off true. Keep a compass away from phones and magnets if you need a real heading. Magnetic north is close to the North Pole, but not exactly on it. Stay on marked trails. A compass does not replace a plan.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, place a compass flat on a table. Which way is north? What happens if you bring a fridge magnet close? Take the magnet away. What does the needle do?
