Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does the moon look bigger some nights?

The Big Idea

A huge moon near the horizon is mostly a trick of the brain! Trees and houses give the moon neighbors to compare with, so it looks giant. High in the empty sky, it looks smaller.

Moon Rises

Step one: the moon rises. When the moon is low, it sits right next to trees and rooftops, and your eyes can compare it to them. Landmarks are nearby.

Brain Compares

Step two: your brain compares. Your brain sizes up the moon against the landmarks. Next to a tiny faraway tree, the moon seems enormous. But your eyes are being tricked.

Moon Climbs, Same Moon

Step three: the moon climbs, and it's the same moon. As it rises, it leaves the rooftops behind. In the empty sky, there are fewer size clues, so it looks smaller. But the moon itself didn't shrink. It was the same size all along.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the illusion! Near the horizon, trees are next to the moon. Your brain compares the moon with those trees. But a photo shows the same moon width overhead.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The moon really does change distance a little over a month, but that isn't the main giant moon effect. A photo at the horizon and later overhead shows nearly the same moon width. Binoculars are fine for the moon, but never use them on the sun. Enjoy moonrise from a safe pull-off, not the middle of a road.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, compare a horizon moon with one later, overhead. Did your eyes disagree with a photo? What landmarks were next to the giant one? Hold your fist at arm's length and compare it to the moon.

Outro

The moon stays the same size, even when it fools your brain! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
