Why Do Wolves Howl?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do wolves howl?

The Big Idea

A howl is long-distance talk! Pack members can find each other, and claim a valley. They can rally for a hunt without walking the whole forest. Coyotes and some dogs howl too, with their own meanings.

Need to Talk

Step one: the pack needs to talk. A wolf pack is spread out across a big, wild place. Walking to everyone would take too long. A lone howl can mean, where is everyone?

Nose Up, Sound Travels

Step two: nose up, and the sound travels. A wolf lifts its nose and starts a long, rising note. A long note carries farther than a bark, and crosses ridges.

Pack Answers

Step three: the pack answers. Other wolves join in, and the different voices make the pack sound bigger. The team is back together, and the message worked. A group howl can mean, we are here.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a howl! The muzzle points up, to send the sound out. The throat makes the long, rising note. The pack answers, with many voices. And the ridge is what the sound travels across.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Howling is not only about a full moon. Night is just quieter. A lone howl can mean, where is everyone? And a group howl can mean, we are here. A howling pet dog is usually talking to sirens, not planning a hunt. Enjoy recordings, and never try to call wild wolves in for a photo.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, listen to a recorded howl. Does it sound like one voice, or many? What job could a long note do better than a short bark? Write down what you heard.

Outro

It is how a pack stays connected. A howl is a wolf pack's long-distance message, and the forest is its phone line. Stay curious! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
