Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do skunks spray?

The Big Idea

Spray is a last warning that became a superpower! The smell is so strong that most hunters decide this snack is not worth it. But a skunk would rather not use it. Other animals use bad smells too, but skunks are the famous sprayers. A skunk would much rather walk away than spend its spray.

Threat Comes

Step one: a threat comes. A dog or a person gets close to a skunk. The skunk does not want a fight.

Stomp, Hiss, and Tail Up

Step two: stomp, hiss, and raise the tail. First the skunk stomps its feet, hisses, and lifts its tail. Those are warnings that say, back away. Stomping, hissing, and a raised tail all say, please give me space.

Spray Only If Needed

Step three: spray only if needed. If the threat stays, glands near the tail shoot a stinky oil, up to several feet. The hunter remembers that smell, and stays away next time. The smell is a lesson that animals remember.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a skunk! The spray glands sit near the tail. The black and white stripes are a warning sign. The stomping feet send an early message. And a safe distance is the best way to avoid a spray.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Spray is not the skunk's first choice. It would rather walk away. Tomato juice is not magic. Time, washing, and grown-up cleaners help pets. A skunk in a garage wants an exit, not a fight. Back away slowly, never corner a skunk, and keep pets inside if one is in the yard.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! If a skunk stamps and lifts its tail, what is the message? Why save the spray until last? How far away should you already be? Write down your idea.

Outro

Skunks warn first, and spray last. Now you know how to respect their message! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
