Intro
Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do snails carry shells?
The Big Idea
A snail shell is a portable house, grown from the snail's own body. It shields the soft parts from drying out, from bumps, and from many hungry mouths. The house is part of the animal. The shell keeps growing for as long as the snail grows.
A Soft Body
Step one: a soft body. A snail's body is soft, so it needs a cover. It cannot take off the shell, because the shell is part of its body.
The Shell Grows
Step two: the shell grows. The shell is made of minerals that the snail builds out as it grows. As it grows, new rim is added, and the house spirals into a coil.
Pull Inside
Step three: pull inside, and slide on. When danger or dry air comes, the snail pulls inside, and can seal the door. When it is safe, the foot carries the house and all. Shells come in many colors and patterns.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at a snail! The shell coil is the spiral house. The body is the soft part that stays inside. The foot is the muscle it glides on. The eyestalks are the lookouts. The door is a tiny seal that closes the shell.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! A cracked shell can be serious. Slugs are close cousins that skip the big outside shell. Many snails come out after rain, because the air is safer and wetter. Safety first: look in the garden, and do not smash shells for fun. Do not peel a living snail out.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, compare a snail and a slug in a picture. Which one has the portable house? What job is the coil doing? Why might a shell be helpful?
